NVQ 4 Early Years Childcare and Education
NVQ 4 in Early Years Childcare and Education is a nationally recognized qualification in all areas of Early Years and can be taken gradually while working. The assessment center will be local and the assessor will visit the home setting to ensure your work reaches certain levels of competence.
The NVQ4 has three different strands of certification, Management, Enhancing Quality and Quality Control, and Advanced Practice.
The course consists of three mandatory core units:
- Access review and update your own knowledge of significant and emerging theory and practice
- Develop your own resources
- Provide information to support decision making
There are also seven additional units. Four to be taken from one of the following, Management, Enhancing Quality and Control or Advanced Practice. The remaining three to be taken from any of those options or the General Option Units:
- Management
- Carry out management responsibilities in child health, safety and protection
- Manage the curriculum
- Manage the observation and assessment of children's development and behaviour

- Manage activities to meet requirements

- Support early years providers to meet their needs
- Prepare to visit and report on the outcomes of visiting Early Years settings
- Contribute to the enhancement of educational experiences within Early Years settings
- Observe procedures and practice
- Ensure premises and people comply with quality assurance requirements
- Ensure compliance with quality assurance requirements
- Evaluate the educational provision in Early Years settings
- Provide feedback on quality assurance visits
- Establish and sustain relationships with Early Years providers
- Evaluate the care and provision within the setting
- Advanced Practice
- Develop, implement and evaluate specific plans and activities to meet individual needs of children
- Assess and enhance the personal, social and emotional development of children
- Enable children to participate confidently and effectively in activities
- Assess and enhance the intellectual and cognitive development of children
- Evaluate and use ICT to support children's learning and development
- Manage sessions with groups of children
- Support the literacy needs of children
- Support children's development in mathematics
- Support the development of children's specific knowledge, understanding and skills
- Work with parents to enhance their children's learning and development
- General option Units
- Work with children with specific learning difficulties
- Support children that have been abused
- Co-ordinate and support children with Special Educational Needs
- Work with teachers to enhance children's learning
- Evaluate and use pedagogy and communication techniques
- Support the care and development of babies in partnership with their parents
- Support the development of new provision and services
- Contribute to the revision of policies, procedures, regulations and practice for the registration and inspection
- Support organisational development
- Promote improvement through the review of practice
- Maintain consistency and quality of judgment when evaluating provision
- Present evidence to support judgments
- Manage the use of financial resources
- Develop productive working relationships
- Select personnel for activities
- Develop teams and individuals to enhance performance
- Facilitate meetings
